On Socialism

Socialism is a system which makes the corporate unity of society responsible for all its economic processes, or all those affecting life and essential living. If anything important is sold, the Government has sold it; if anything important is given, the Government has given it; if anything important is even tolerated, the Government is responsible for tolerating it. This is the very reverse of anarchy; it is an extreme enthusiasm for authority. It is in many ways worthy of the moral dignity of the mind; it is a collective acceptance of very complete responsibility… A Socialist Government is one which in its nature does not tolerate any true and real opposition. For there the Government provides everything; and it is absurd to ask a Government to provide an opposition.

You cannot go to the Sultan and say reproachfully, “You have made no arrangements for your brother dethroning you and seizing the Caliphate.” You cannot go to a medieval king and say, “Kindly lend me two thousand spears and one thousand bowmen, as I wish to raise a rebellion against you.” Still less can you reproach a Government which professes to set up everything, because it has not set up anything to pull down all it has set up. Opposition and rebellion depend on property and liberty… The critic of the State can only exist where a religious sense of right protects his claims to his own bow and spear; or at least, to his own pen or his own printing press. It is absurd to suppose that he could borrow the royal pen to advocate regicide or use the Government printing presses to expose the corruption of the Government. Yet it is the whole point of Socialism, the whole case for Socialism, that unless all printing presses are Government printing presses, printers may be oppressed.

Everything is staked on the State’s justice; it is putting all the eggs in one basket. Many of them will be rotten eggs; but even then you will not be allowed to use them at political elections.

She has also recorded with a great many other acts most recently with the Oyster Band where their live recording of Joy Division's 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' did the rare thing when it equalled the original in its emotional intensity even though the rendition was nothing like the original.

Not content with being pigeonholed into one genre June has also worked with a Jazz Trio, Quercus, where together they recorded work of rare and sublime beauty.

Francis Gary Powers

Powers was discharged from the Air Force in 1956 with the rank of captain. He then joined the CIA's U-2 program at the civilian grade of GS-12. U-2 pilots flew espionage missions using an aircraft that could reach altitudes above 70,000 feet (21.3 km), making it invulnerable to known Soviet anti-aircraft weapons of the time. The U-2 was equipped with a state-of-the-art camera designed to take high-resolution photos from the edge of the stratosphere over hostile countries, including the Soviet Union. U-2 missions systematically photographed military installations and other important sites.

Soviet intelligence was aware of encroaching U-2 flights since 1956 but lacked effective countermeasures until 1960. On May 1, 1960, Powers' U-2, which departed from a military airbase in Peshawar, Pakistan with support from the US Air Station at Badaber (Peshawar Air Station), was shot down by an S-75 Dvina (SA-2 Guideline) surface-to-air missile over Sverdlovsk. Powers was unable to activate the plane's self-destruct mechanism before he bailed out and was captured.

Powers' U-2 plane was hit by the first missile fired. A total of eight were launched; one of them hit a MiG-19 jet fighter which was sent to intercept the U-2 but could not reach a high enough altitude. Its pilot, Sergei Safronov, ejected but died of his injuries. Another Soviet aircraft, a newly manufactured Su-9 in transit flight, also attempted to intercept Powers' U-2. The unarmed Su-9 was directed to ram the U-2 but missed because of the large differences in speed. In The Skunk Works, Powers claimed that upon ejecting he saw the parachute of another pilot deploy behind him.

When the U.S. government learned of Powers' disappearance over the Soviet Union, they issued a cover statement claiming a "weather plane" had strayed off course after its pilot had "difficulties with his oxygen equipment". What CIA officials did not realize was that the plane crashed almost fully intact, and the Soviets recovered its equipment. Powers was interrogated extensively by the KGB for months before he made a confession and a public apology for his part in espionage. The incident set back talks between Khrushchev and Eisenhower. On August 17, 1960, Powers was convicted of espionage against the Soviet Union and was sentenced to a total of ten years, three years in imprisonment followed by seven years of hard labor. He was held in Vladimir Central Prison, 100 miles east of Moscow. The prison contains a small museum with an exhibit on Powers, who allegedly developed a good rapport with Russian prisoners there. Some pieces of the plane and Powers' uniform are on display at the Monino Airbase museum near Moscow.

On February 10, 1962, Powers was exchanged, along with American student Frederic Pryor, in a well-publicized spy swap at the Glienicke Bridge in Berlin. The exchange was for Soviet KGB Colonel Vilyam Fisher, known as "Rudolf Abel", who had been caught by the FBI and tried and jailed for espionage.

In 2010, CIA documents were released indicating that American officials did not believe Powers' account of the incident at the time, because it was contradicted by a classified National Security Agency report. My father was first an aircraft mechanic and crop duster pilot and then pilot for Imperial Airlines.

I virtually grew up at the airport in Imperial at Visco Flying Co. enjoying hours of time in the sky flying with my Dad.

He took me flying in all kinds of airplanes and taught me to fly.

At age 15 I flew my first solo flight and got my pilots license. Thanks Dad.

My Canada has Trudeau as Prime Minister

Good guys win a huge historic massive victory against overwhelming odds, destroying forces of real evil and entitlement. I am so proud to be a Canadian this morning. We rejected the advice of our media masters, the pundits, the pitiful wretches who wage a war paid to not know what they know.

I liked Trudeau but have to admit I thought Harper was going to wipe the floor with him. Nuanced messaging works for me but when Trudeau was crucified for thoughtful statements about China and other complex issues, I thought he had little chance. Harper's scorched earth campaign was probably the biggest factor in the Liberal win. However the Trudeau team ran a remarkable campaign. Lots of meaty policy Canadians in the end found appetising. Sticking to the sunny ways, throwing all the dark arts under the bus and just going for it Canadian style.

Three big things that have me ecstatic.1) Legal Pot: the stupidity of prohibition abandoned. This will add billions of dollars to the public purse. It will subtract billions of dollars from the public expense. It will make society much more productive because thousands of Canadian will no longer have a criminal record for getting an illegal smile.

2) Infrastructure spending: This will create jobs and make our nation more productive. Comparing Canada to northern Europe, Austria, Switzerland, Taiwan and Singapore its very clear the potential of Canada has barely been scratched. The common thread through all those successful economies is fantastic infrastructure and government shaping the economy.

3) The F35 dies: Canada doges the biggest flying rattrap ever. I wonder if the plain brown envelopes can also be recalled.

Canada has a exaggerated sense of its importance on the world stage. Its part of our mythology. Harper destroyed our international brand. Fortunately Canada is so insignificant the world hardly noticed. I look forward to sewing the flag back on the backpack.

Propaganda Techniques

Propaganda is a form of communication, often biased or misleading in nature, aimed towards influencing the attitude of a population toward some cause, position or political agenda.

Propaganda is information that is not impartial and used primarily to influence an audience and further an agenda, often by presenting facts selectively (perhaps lying by omission) to encourage a particular synthesis, or using loaded messages to produce an emotional rather than a rational response to the information presented.

Common media for transmitting propaganda messages include news reports, government reports, historical revision, junk science, books, leaflets, movies, radio, television, and posters. Less common nowadays are letter post envelopes examples of which of survive from the time of the American Civil War. In the case of radio and television, propaganda can exist on news, current-affairs or talk-show segments, as advertising or public-service announce "spots" or as long-running advertorials.

Propaganda campaigns often follow a strategic transmission pattern to indoctrinate the target group. This may begin with a simple transmission such as a leaflet dropped from a plane or an advertisement. Generally these messages will contain directions on how to obtain more information, via a web site, hot line, radio program, etc. The strategy intends to initiate the individual from information recipient to information seeker through reinforcement, and then from information seeker to opinion leader through indoctrination.

A number of techniques based in social psychological research are used to generate propaganda. Many of these same techniques can be found under logical fallacies, since propagandists use arguments that, while sometimes convincing, are not necessarily valid.

Information dissemination strategies only become propaganda strategies when coupled with propagandistic messages. Identifying these messages is a necessary prerequisite to study the methods by which those messages are spread.

The 20th century has been characterized by three developments of great political importance: the growth of democracy, the growth of corporate power, and the growth of corporate propaganda as a means of protecting corporate power against democracy.

The Martian makes me proud to be an Earthling

If only Ridley Scott had directed Interstellar. This movie has best picture written all over it. If you took Gravity and Castaway and made them both way better you have The Martian. It was the most emotional charged feel good movie I can remember. There was not just one peak but at least 5 high 5 moments, incredible moviemaking.

Lumberjack life, and frozen ponds will always be part of a Canadians DNA regardless of race, creed, colour or sexual orientation.
