I think the photographer who took this recently passed away. And as I recall the subject was Minamata disease, named after the town in Japan where there were so many chemical plants. The disease came mostly from exposure to cadmium. There was great demand for cadmium sulfate; it was (still is?) the raw material in photocells and photoresistors (industrial controls and cameras). Can someone recall the photographer's name? I wanna say Diane Arbus but doesn't sound right...

I recognize the photo from way back when, while still in high school. Had something to do with mercury poisoning I believe.
